The Westchester Community Foundation (WCF) recently partnered with the Jacob Burns Film Center (364 Manville Road in Pleasantville, NY) to present the documentary film Ivory Tower on September 4th.
Ivory Tower is the 14th film in the WCF’s “Community Matters” series. Every “Community Matters” event entails a public viewing of a documentary followed by a community discussion of local issues, a panel discussion with local experts, and a reception.
Parents, professors, prospective college students and other community members came together to watch Ivory Tower, which questions the purpose of higher education in an era when the price of college has increased more than any other service in the United States.
After the film, attendees listened to the perspectives and opinions on Ivory Tower and college education from President of Manhattanville College, Dr. Jon Calvert Strauss, and the President of SUNY Purchase College, Thomas Schwarz – in an engaging session moderated by Laura Rossi of the Westchester Community Foundation. Attendees also had the opportunity to share their own stories and ask questions to the panel regarding college, tuition and whether or not a higher education is truly worth it.
