In honor of World Emoji Day (July 17th), Summer Trails Day Camp, located in Somers, NY, recently celebrated by having campers and staff dress-up as their favorite emoji and they played emoji games such as: emoji tag, emoji relay races, pin the sunglasses on the emoji, and emoji memory. An emoji gives you a chance to express emotions or show what you are doing instead of just sending words, there are pictures to include or use instead. Most everyone has a favorite emoji they use frequently! Emojis continue to grow in popularity and will be spotlighted in The Emoji Movie that’s coming to theaters this Friday, July 28th.
Emojis are ideograms and smileys used in electronic messages and Web pages. Emojis are used much like emoticons and exist in various genres, including facial expressions, common objects, places and types of weather, and animals. Originating on Japanese mobile phones in the late 1990s, emojis have become increasingly popular worldwide since their international inclusion in Apple‘s iPhone, which was followed by similar adoption by Android and other mobile operating systems. According to emojipedia.org, in total there are 2,666 emojis in the Unicode Standard as of June 2017. This includes some sequences for gender or skin tone, flags, and the components that are used to create keycap, flag, and other sequences. More emoji statistics.
