Yonkers Tennis Center, a family-owned club with six indoor courts, celebrated their official Westchester Green Business Partnership certification in a ceremony on February 15, 2018. Their green initiatives included the installation of LED lighting on the courts, recycling practices like the installation of a water filling station, selling reusable water bottles, and using “earth-friendly” cleaning products throughout the club, were just some of the many efforts being recognized.

“The Green Business Partnership congratulates Joe Curto and the staff at Yonkers Tennis Center on achieving green business certification. The YTC did a fantastic job addressing all aspects of environmental sustainability at the tennis center and developed a roadmap for continuous improvement in the future. Well done!” said Dani Glaser, Program Director Green Business Partnership.

The certification was held at Yonkers Tennis Center’s club at 493 Sprain Road in Yonkers, and was led by Dani Glaser, as well as representatives from The Business Council of Westchester, The County Executive’s team and the Mayor’s Office from the city of Yonkers.

“Yonkers Tennis Center is committed to reducing our environmental footprint and promoting environmental stewardship at all levels of our organization,” said Joe Curto, President of Yonkers Tennis Center. “Our goal is to minimize our organization’s impact and maximize future generations’ ability to work, live and play in our shared natural environment, with equal access to clean water, clean air and natural resources.”

100 percent of the club’s energy is powered by wind generation, which is the equivalent of saving over 45,000 gallons of gasoline. The new LED court lighting, which was installed in August 2017, has saved Yonkers Tennis Center approximately 142,800 kWH annually. The club has also encouraged members to make sustainability a priority, by recycling water bottles, notifying staff of any visible water leaks, and to use the water re-filling station as often as possible, in lieu of plastic water bottles. In addition, the club boasts several other green initiatives including:
  • Donating over 10,000 used tennis balls
  • Locker rooms include forced hot air dryers and waterless toilets, as well as motion-sensor lights that automatically turn off the lights when not in use
  • The lounge furniture is made of recycled plastic water and soda bottles

About Westchester Green Business Partnership:
The Green Business Partnership (GBP) was founded in 2009 as the Westchester Green Business Challenge, a program of the Business Council of Westchester in partnership with Westchester County and Green Team Spirit LLC. In 2014, the program expanded to offer an official green business certification available to organizations that complete a rigorous and rewarding process to reduce environmental impact. With nearly 100 active members, GBP provides a solution to organizations that want to go green but lack the time and expertise to incorporate sustainability into their core mission. Unlike other programs, the GBP is holistic and focuses on all areas of environmental sustainability, including organizational commitment, energy, materials management, transportation, land use and water. Responding to widespread demand for access to the GBP’s propriety tools and turnkey system, the program was rebranded as the Green Business Partnership in 2017 and made available statewide.
